Title: All these new babies...shawls anyone?
Post by: Jeannine on May 16, 2007, 21:32:05
We are hearing about new babies all the time, I believe CarolineJ 's  Grandbump is the latest one we have heard about.

Just for interest. I have quite a big collection of babies shawl patterns if  anyone is feeling the urge to knit, they are mostly  Shetland shawls  using 1 ply cobweb pure wool but I do have some heavier ones using 2 and  3 ply.

I rarely knit them anymore and as most are old Heirlooms.

It is a shame that heirloom shawls are not used as much as they once were as it is a lovely tradition to hand them down to the next generation.

XX Jeannine

Take a look at www.elspethshawls.co.uk     ( I use the same patterns)

Aw these are the shawls my late mother in law knitted Jeannine, she was a lovely knitter.  She made a couple of shawls for my use but...............  say no more.   She also knitted 2 bedspreads from cotton, now that is an heirloom.  We were given one and brother in law the other.

Wow! Those shawls are amazing. I dont think I could manage one of those. Patience and an eye for detail wouldnt fit into my personality, as it was too full of impatience and ham fistedness! (fistdness.....is that a word ???)

I think its a shame that these sort of crafts are getting rarer and rarer. It must be lovely to have something like that to pass on to your children, whereas the 'mothercare special' is not quite as spectacular.

Mmmm, I think I could give one a go, as long as Naomi has the same gestation period as an elephant. I think 3 years should do it ;D

It is not as difficult as it looks. It is knitted on a round needle from the outside to the middle. If you can read a pattern you would be OK. The hardesr bit is working with the fine wolo but after an hour two you forget it is fine and adjust. As you are repeating the pattern ropund the row with a lot of stitches at the start it helps if you can retain the pattern in you head,I don't do that so well so I am constantly looking at the pattern which I have pinned to a board in front of me for an  easy view.

Can send a pattern if you want to have a go and also I can send youa source for the wool
