Just a thought, Why don’t slugs and snails eat weeds, but as soon as you plant lettuce seedling - Dinner Time, if someone could breed a weed eating slug they would be on a winner and be remembered for all time.
To be fair-they do eat weeds-it`s just that we never notice until our precious babies go.
I`ve eaten snails in France but am still waiting for the recipe for slug au vin-or maybe they taste like whelks?-
normal garden snails can be eaten :o I speak from experience
Aren't they a bit chewy though?
What do you think slugs and snails lived on before gardeners came along? The reason pests zero in on what we grow is that it's not so well adapted to the environment, so it's weaker, it's often juicier and softer, and we tend to grow a lot of it all in one place, just to make it easy for them.

they are very chewey, and not very nice if you dont remove the slime well enough. Not bad bit of free protein though
they do go to burger king as the main ingredient!

ha ha it's all go for me today! Living in France yes I have eaten snails, quite a few times and what is really yummy is the garlic butter you cook them in. I believe that you need to trap the snails and stop feeding them for a few (5-6) days which will purge their intestines (or you can feed them dill the first day, gives them flavour I hear): then you put them in salt which makes them get rid of all their slime (gross). You wash them really well,then you kill them by plunging them in boiling water for a few minutes (gross again). Take them out of the shells and put them in proper snail shells fit for cooking (or a little dish with little holes in it specially for snails) and stuff the shells with garlic butter. 30 mins in the oven and Bob's your aunty.
Sounds like a lot of bother and not much fun for the snails!!!
The first time I eat snails it must have been Michelin-cos they had all texture of old tyres.
Then we found ourselves in a place where they put their reputation on me liking snails-think heaven and garlic exploding in your mouth.
Just goes to show it`s about variety and what you do with it

Just seen the photo of Cookie's gorgeous Jersy Royals which made my tummy rumble......but now after reading this I suddenly don't feel hungry any more ::)
and I have just come out of the back garden putting salt on slugs with a torch.

I would like to try garden snails some time but I want to get a fish tank for them to live in first and get them ready for cooking. RFW says feed them carrott and wash every day for a week then they are ready.
