Title: onions bolting
Post by: mr plasma on May 13, 2007, 22:03:25
i read on another thread about onions running to seed wont store well and that its advisable to use immediately, my question is if i remove the flower stalk and leave them in the ground will they continue to grow bigger or should i dig them up now even though they are a bit on the small side

My view, FWIW, is to cut off the flower stalk as soon as it appears.  The onions will still be OK.  This is based on only two years's experience, but seems to work. :)

I've heard that the ones with thicker necks don't store well, so should be used first.

They're not so good at all, but use them first, get what you can off them, then move on to the good ones.

Mr Plasma, I was wondering exactly the same. My silver moon onions are all bolting. I have cut off the flowering stalks but wanted to know if I should leave them in the ground.
If they will get bigger I would leave them but if they won't I'm going to clear the onion bed and plant something else.
