Title: out of control dwarf runner beans
Post by: STHLMgreen on May 13, 2007, 15:42:28
I think I may have seen this somewhere on here but I can't find it by searching.

When you plant your beans out, how deep do you plant them? Up to their leaves like tomatoes, or the same level as in the small pot they came from?

It isn't quite warm enough here, but soon I hope as my dwarf runner beans, Hestia, didn't know that they were suppose to be dwarfs and are growing like crazy! They say 30 - 60cms but mine are already around the 60 cm mark, with few big leaves. Anyone else growing these? I have 11 seedlings and only one is growing more out than up, maybe it is the dep small pots I used.

I don't plant  runner bean plants very deeply, maybe cover an inch of the stem, but not up to the leaves. If sowing direct, I tend to put the seeds in about 2 - 3" deep.
Sounds a bit like you might have had them in a place with low light levels, and they might have been straining towards the light? They don't need a lot of heat at all to grow, and even germinate at quite cool temperatures. Keep them cool and they may slow down a bit.
Have just sown mine, in rootrainers, outside, hopefully they'll be ready to put out at end of May.

Yep - my Hestia are romping skywards as I type - the notion that they are dwarf runner beans being clearly news to them  ;D  I've been hardening them off in the hope that that will dampen their enthusiasm a little, but no signs yet.

put all my runners outside to harden off today ........ they're ALL dwarfs now, ripped to shreds by the wind that occurred about 5pm after a lovely sunny day !

grrrrrrrrrrrrr   :-X

still, that'll teach me for sowing too early !

Sorry to hear that - are you ok for seeds for the next batch?  PM me if you might need a few.

thanks so much ellkebe, but I'm fine thanks.  I've more beans than I can shake a big stick at, just a bit annoyed at myself for forgetting the potential for wind around our gaff !

Got plenty of time to start again.

;D

So today I put the out of control beans outside on the balcony in a mini greenhouse. When I took them in a bit before dark, I noticed they had white spots on the leaves, but don't look bad otherwise. What is this? It can't be normal, can it?

I thought 10-20 degrees Celsius would be okay to be out and they were in the greenhouse to stop the wind tearing them.

???

It might also be worth noting that out of about 15 seedlings, only one is much smaller than the others and acting like a 'dwarf' runner bean should!

I am sorry I am laughing and I shouldn't, it's  not nice, but your comment tickled me. I watch this thread as I am itching to find out how these beans end up,they are only supposed to be 18inches high. I think you need another few words with them. Sorry for laughing XX Jeannine

It's okay Jeannine! Enjoy the laugh... who knows how big they'll end up!

Anyone know about those white spots?
