Title: ID needed - a kind of thyme??
Post by: pigeonseed on May 12, 2007, 21:21:25
I've got a herb which i think seeded itself in my flower bed. It has flowers a bit like thyme, and smells and tastes like a pizza-y herb of some kind. But instead of being woody and bushy with tiny leaves, it has a spreading habit, and long, narrow leaves.

anyone have any idea what it is?

next time i go i'll take the camera and post a pic

I don't think so - but I am pretty sure I have solved my own mystery! It's winter savory. I did sow some about 5 years ago and then forgot about it.

It is a good plant - it's very pretty, with a sort of spiky, spreading habit and lovely flowers. And the flavour is very strong, like marjoram or thyme but hotter.

Pigeonseed, have you settled on it being Winter Savory?

Might have a go at some of that, I love herbs and spice, this sounds like a great all-in-one!  ;D

Yes I'm pretty sure - it looks exactly like all the photos. And it is a relative of thyme and marjoram etc. I would recommend it it's very tasty
