When I came to sow my sweetcorn, I found I only had 9 seeds left, and only 5 have germinated. Will this be enough to get good pollination? If not, is it too late to sow some more?
Hope not too late,as i too found gaps so have pre-soaked some extra seed ,different name but same sugar whatsit
fingers crossed!
It is definately not too late to sow more XX Jeannine
They'll pollinate but you'll be short of corn?
Not too late? True. Our 40 are just going in!
Oops! Thanks Tim - I haven't sown mine yet! (Tomorrow's job?)
Normally only get one or two cobs per plant so 5 wouldn't be enough here. But I won't be sowing them (direct into the soil) for a week or so anyway, so no problem - you've plenty of time.
Put some in late June last year and got a better harvest than earlier crop so loads of time.
Meant to say, don't forget to earth them up around the root area, it makes such a lot of difference.
Ok, off to buy some seeds tomorrow!
Ours are about 2" at the moment and we are about to sow some more for the plant sale at the start of June...
;D
Maybe I'll wait and buy some of your plants, Saddad. :D
How much earthing up do they need? I was planning on growing mine in pots.

I normally pull 4 to 6" height of soil up around them. They seem to put out more roots. But then, you probably will have better quality of soil in your pot, than there is on the plot here, and also you'll probably keep the soil moister than I can. Maybe you could leave a largeish gap towards the top of the pot and fill this with more soil when it's grown a bit. I wouldn't worry too much, doubt if they earth up on a commercial scale.
Thanks Jenny. :)
