Title: Tomatoes - pinching out side shoots
Post by: autumn leaf on May 12, 2007, 17:41:57
I apologise for what must seem a silly question but I thought all tomato plants had to have the side shoots pinched out.  Some of the labels on ones I have bought do advise doing this but others don't mention it.  I read something on this site a little while ago which made me wonder if pinching out is the right thing to do on all varieties - does it need to be done on “bush” varieties for example or for tumblers grown in a hanging basket?  I'm all set to nip a few but would be grateful if someone could tell me if it is ok. ??? ???

You don't need to pinch them out on bush or the tumbler type.

Hope that helps mate.

Thanks - will sort them out tomorrow (at least it's not raining in the greenhouse!) :D

flowedew (my hero) reoccomends that you treat them as a cutting and pot them up - one extra plant for free and maybe two trusses if early enough
