Title: Chaffinch tapping.
Post by: janet h 1948 on May 06, 2007, 20:40:05
Does anyone know why chaffinches tap on windows. My daughter has just moved house &  she has one that keeps doing it.

They think they see a rival in their own reflection.  Well thats what I think.  Chaffinches are all fighting at the moment, well the males are....  ;D ;D

I posted a similar question about a blue tit which spent most of the winter and early spring either tapping at the house windows or the wing mirror on the car in the drive. It proved quite disconcerting when it landed on the open window ledge whilst I was taking a shower!

It stopped doing it about six weeks ago, so maybe it found a mate or lost interest!

Whenever our favourite bantam, Sally, comes into the kitchen she makes a bee line straight for the stainless steel bin & 'taps' away at her reflection - presumably she thinks it's a rival chicken.  Same as budgies with mirrors I suppose.
