Title: Tiny Tiny Bay TRee
Post by: gordonsveg on May 05, 2007, 08:16:18
 ??? ??? ??? :-[
Are bay trees acid or lime lovers?. We have been growing one in a pot for 4 years now and it is still only about 8 ins high. What are we doing wrong please?
The parent tree is huge and its getting embarrissing(?) asking son in law for leaves all the time.

Ive had bay in alkaline soil and neutral and it did well, but they do tend to stagnate in pots so would put in ground if you can so it can stretch its legs. They become massive if left to their own devices, so what you have effectivly got is a bonsai bay ;D

Again neutral or Alkali... not acid... will appreciate more space!
;D

I also have one in a pot in the greenhouse and was thinking of planting it outside but was a little worried over how big it will grow and how big and far the roots will go. how much space? and how big are roots?

there is one on the unworked plot next door to me - it's planted in the ground and is absolutely huge, much taller than me, and a really nice shape.  OH keeps hounding me to dig it up and pop it in my lottie  ;)

Definitely plant it in the ground. It will be much happier and less prone to disease (scaleinsects etc.) The bay tree in my garden is massive; I cut it back to 6ft recently. I used the pruning to mulch a path on my plot. My whole plot smells of bay leaves now  ;D.

No idea. It's growing in a shady corner in a large ornamental bed full of shrubs and perrennials. There used to be a really tall plum tree right next to the bay, but it's only after the plum tree was felled that the bay really got big.
