Title: Asparagus space
Post by: Barnowl on May 04, 2007, 12:56:01
We have a single row of asparagus along the middle of  a 3ft wide bed that we planted last year. Shoots are coming up down the middle only.

Just got some purple asparagus we want to try.

Will it be OK to plant alongside of the existing row, or is that too close?

It will be ok .. should be able to manage 3 rows on a 3 foot wide bed.

I have 20 crowns in 2 rows down a 4ft wide/20ft long bed.  Usually there is enough room to grow a light feeder in between the two rows - my lettuces love the shade in the summer - so I would have thought you were okay to put some more plants in.
My bed is 3 yrs old this year and the asparagus spears seem to be growing up to 6 inches away from the centre of the crown. I am not expectin them to spread much further - but would be interested if anyone can tell me if they do. This is my first ever asparagus bed!
