Title: Lilac suckers-will they flower??
Post by: LJ on May 03, 2007, 15:07:04
Can anyone tell me if lilac suckers will flower? I've had them in a pot for about 2 years and they are growing well but no sign of flowers again this year. I'm wanting to transplant it into my garden now it's a decent size, but wondering if it will ever flower and would I be better buying a new plant??!!

Thanks,
Lisa

Yes, eventually. BUT, they may not be the same as the plant from which you took them as many modern hybrids are grafted onto wild lilac rootstock. AND, if they have produced suckers in the past which they obviously have for you to have them, they will almost certainly produce suckers in the future, which may not be good news for you. We have a wild lilac in our front hedgerow and it is a dratted nuisance sending new growth up in our garden.

I have an old (probably Victorian) lilac which has produced loads of suckers. I've given some away, and they do flower, true to type.

I do wish people would read what is wriiten. I did say the MAY not be the same if they came from grafted plants. And suckering Lilacs ALWAYS produce suckers.
The decision to keep or throw is up to the original poster.

I didn't say otherwise! All I did was quote my experience with this particular lilac.

Thanks for info. Think I'll plant in and just see, I can always replace it if nothing happens or it becomes a nuisance.

That one looks very much like mine, which is used round the site as a hedging plant.

Very much like the one which is suckering into our garden from the hedge outside.
