My sweetcorn got themselves to about 6 inches high, 3-4 leaves and have all stopped growing. There's been no visible growth for ages. They are on second shelf in mini g/h in a spot that sees sun for about 1/3 of the day. It's quite warm though as they are against a brick wall.
The cheek of it is that the ones i gave my friend have quadrupled in size!! Should i give her mine to look after?
Thanks, Em x
Trick to sweetcorn is to plant it only three weeks before it goes outside, if left in a pot longer than this it can and most often does go dormant, there is no advantage to planting it early. When you put it out it will pick up though, but if may be slow to recover. I planted my main crop yesterdayXX Jeannine
Hi Emmy
Mine is exactly the same, altho I had no idea if this was ok or not as I am such a beginner!
I have it in 4" pots on a V sunny windowsill and its just STOPPED for about a wek I would say now.
I found out after I had done it I had messed up by sewing two varieties anyway so maybe its a blessing (esp as I forgot to mark which was which ::))
I've just potted mine up as it was growing like mad. It does need room for its roots.
I am 1 month ahead with sweetcorn this year and would rather plant out immediately they are 6 inches high rather than wait. The photos on my page show the difference this year on my experiment with successional sowing. The 3rd batch is not even sown yet.

first lot in.. 2nd lot( for outside) planted yesterday in rootrainers :)
Question for allaboutliverpool : Do you feed miracle grow to all your veg? I know it does my flowers a power of good.
Allaboutliverpool - mine look exactly like your ones in the cold frame on 22 April, bt are in 4" pots on a V sunny windowsill.
Should I be putting them elsewhere or scrap the whole idea and start again!!
Thanks all. So my plan is then to plant these up at the lottie and sow some more next few days? Are they susceptible to slug damage and will they need a cloche at the lottie?
Questions, questions!
Oh, I was wondering what had happened to my sweetcorn babies!! I gues they are feeling confined. Just gonna hold out until after the bank holiday then let them loose on the lottie (with a backup crew in the greenhouse). Thanks for these great hints!
Well you know mine are cheeky as they are in big pots! Thought I'd give them loads of room on seeing the size of the root that came out of the prop tray but they just sulked about it. ::)
i would get them in emma. i have never cloched mine and havent had too much problems with slugs eating them (i feel i may be tempting fate...). I'm going to put mine out later in the week, they are looking pretty good i started them of in root trainers. my lotty neighbour has had hers out for a couple of weeks. people have even planted out their tomatos on the plot down here.
It's been so warm though hasn't it? I've noticed people putting in all sorts that I m still too scared to release into the wild!
Allabout liverpool : What spacing did you use - they look quite close together??
Jitterbug
I planted some sweetcorn into small (2") cell pots too early really, I have found since that peat pots are better.
The seedlings were getting too big for the pots so I have had to plant out a little earlier than recommended. They are about 6"-9" high. I left them to harden off for a week and planted them out over the weekend. The leaves were looking a little pale prior to hardening off, but seem to be going paler and yellowy. The weather should not be a problem as here in Liverpool , like the rest of the country the weather has been great.
