Title: good destinations for a break
Post by: manicscousers on April 29, 2007, 20:36:06
anyone got any good ideas for a 3 day break, about 150 miles max from manchester, nearest weekend to july 24th, we've been married for 35 years, ray's 60 in june and I'm 55 this year so we fancy a few days bed, breakfast and evening meal..due to lack of mobility, there has to be stuff to see within a short-ish walk..come on, guys and gals, ideas please.. ;D

hi

How about the Porth Avallen Hotel, Carlyon Bay

http://www.activereservations.com/hotel/brochure/en/231099?subid=PPCGH1hn231099en

Its a short drive from the eden project and the hanging gardens.

It has wonderful gardens and overlooks the sea and  the South West Coastal Path is just yards from the hotel.

we have been twice.

Awwww too late,  was gonna suggest here  ;D

http://www.gibbon-bridge.co.uk/
It has award winning gardens, very beautiful indeed and they grow most of the vegetables that you eat in their magnificent restaurant  :P
Went there last summer for a short break, gorgeous hotel  :) And lots to see in the surrounding little villages, but boy did i get car sick with the twisty turny farm roads in the middle of nowhere  ::)

York is a lovely place, good choice, hope you have a great time  :) (Remember years gone by, in 70's when boyfriend was at York uni  ;D)

thanks, honeybee, my brother in law used to live around there..
we've never stayed in york so, after looking into it on the net, decided to go with Holmwood House, quite close to the museums etc,
I'm looking forward to the viking place, I've always been fascinated by them, also , my mum used to love York Minster so we'll be going there

Ace, does your oh ever read your posts?  ;D

no probs, cambourne, I only know about mileage as ray has compulsive tendencies and works everything out to the last mile  :)

Went to York, about 10years ago, had a perfect afternoon tea at Betty`s tea rooms, visited the minster and did a night time ghost walk (it was halloween) all of it was great, shame I was only there for a day!

I believe the railway museum is well worth a visit (Ill get my anorak)

Have a great time

Regards

Matt

If you want a quiet moment, the oldest church in York, where Supersprout's funeral was held, is St Mary's, in Bishophill, off Micklegate.

I work in York and live not far away, so if you want to know anything else...
You've done right to stay near the centre, as parking charges are scandalous in York!

Maybe you and I should do a weekend break at Gibbon Bridge and Ray and Kev could have a take-a way, that way we are all happy  ;D

Railway Museum in York is fascinating - they've got a bullet train and an absolutely huge Chinese engine - anoraks not compulsory

I'd love to see the church, caroline, I couldn't get to the funeral but I could have a think about her  :-\

the railway museum, we'll have a think about, doesn't really float my boat, ray might enjoy it

As said previosly the ghost walks are fun.
from what I can remember there are two one guy dresses up the other doesnt - go with the guy that dresses up!

BTW my alternate weekend destination would of been Whitby (120 miles) - maybe the weekend after,
quick day trip try Buxton (26 miles) - but I'm sligthly biased

If you go to the Railway Museum, you could ride on the Yorkshire Wheel (a sort of Yorkshire version of the London Eye) whilst your OH views the trains! The trains are free (or were last year), but the Wheel isn't. Still, super views tho'.

Manic, sounds great, you certainly deserve a break after all those hanging baskets etc you have been working on. Have fun and enjoy. I am off to Torquay with middle daughter on 2nd June. They are going to drop me of at Paignton to stay a couple of days with Charlie's nephew and his partner. He works in the graphics dept of Paignton Zoo (maybe I will get a free pass :)) Then rest of week will be spent with daughter/partner and 3 grandchildren.
Lorna.
