Hi Everyone
My Question is it to Early to plant out Runner Beans. As I have planted mine out yesterday (28/04/07).
Gordon
If they get killed by frost, it was too early!!
No, cover them until frosts are gone - like end May for us.
This is where Poundland cloches come in useful; it's really easy to grow things under them for the first few weeks. I'm not putting anything tender in the ground just yet, but things in pots are about to start going into them.
I'm down in Norfolk, and have had my runners out for about two weeks now, they are doing magnificently! I do have fleece etc at the ready though!
Mine are still in the packet.
But we do have funny weather this year....
It's always a risk planting out runners early. As Tim says late may early June is soon enough for them to go out ..Some years I have got away with early planting, some years not ..Its not just the frost thats a risk with early runners its getting the first flowers on them pollinated.. If all your plants have gone out , set a few more bean seeds in pots now just in case .. Cheers Jim
OK - I give in: have just sown mine! A tray each of Enorma & White Lady.
Another runner bean question
Sow in pots first or straight into the ground?
I would say pots.. See what others say ,, :)
pots for us, 'cos of slugs :)
:)
pots for me,'cos of mice! /shadesx
If you sow them quite early, and don't plant them out till June - don't they get enormous and tangled by then?
Only sowed mine on Friday, popping through already. :o Looking around on our site lots of folk seem to have young plants in already and others have obvoiusly sown direct- but we are in a cosy corner here in our part of Essex.
I will pot sow mine later in the week and not plant out till the middle part of May. I keep being told by Mr "you don't wanna do it like that" on the allotments that the cooler winds will also knock them back if you plant too early. From looking at the ones people have got in already he seems to be right on this!
Regards
Matt
That's certainly true on our site as they were put out by some last weekend and all the big basal leaves have been knocked off in the wind...
