Title: Hens claws
Post by: Lost in France on April 25, 2007, 17:31:17
I have 5 hens and a cockerel within an electric poultry fence in the garden. A couple of days ago I noticed blood in the henhouse and traced it back to one of the hens who had a claw hanging off. I assumed it had got caught somewhere and sprayed her foot with antiseptic. It seemed to heal but today I noticed that she has another hanging off and again sprayed her foot but am worried that there may be something I'm missing? I've had hens for several years and am meticulous in their care and have never had a claw off before.

I introduced a cockerel a couple of weeks ago...might he be up to something? He seems ok with them although does get into skirmishes with our two young peacocks who try to rule the roost as they think the hens are their family as they reared them!

We are living in France and the vets aren't too tuned into hens so I try to treat them myself wherever possible. Has anyone any ideas or similar experience?

Not had experience of that - have you checked your area well to make sure there in nothing nasty she can get caught in whilst scratching about?

Also does she have scaly legs?

Thanks for suggestions, fortunately no scaley legs, so will check the run thoroughly in the morning.
