Title: Cucumber seeds
Post by: Stan0406 on April 24, 2007, 22:18:41
1st full season as an A4a member - thought I would grow some cucumbers.  Dad said have these.... they are dead easy to grow - I think dead was the obvious word for me.
Planted them indoors 3 weeks ago - and nothing!!!
Need advice from all the experts - what would be the best seed to plant
Do I need to do anything special
Plant indoors or out etc etc
Help needed!!!
All the other seeds I planted have all behaved, and done as they should - but not the easy cucumbers!!

I start mine off in a heated propagator with my squash plants and as soon as germnated put them on a sunny windowsill. I don't do anything special with them, but do plant the seeds on their edge to stop them rotting - same as squash. Generally they germinated in 3 - 4 days.

I don't have a greenhouse so have marketmore, burpless tasty green and some seeds that a neighbour gave me that he saved himself but can't remember what they were - but they give spiky little cuc's which taste alright. Of the three I personally like Marketmore best as very crisp with a proper cucumber taste.

I haven't started mine yet... quite deliberately as they don't like cold once growing..

I planted 2 types of cucumber seeds in my propagator and they germinated within a few days. Are the seeds old? I have some spare, if you need any pm me.

did you plant them on their side or flat. if flat they may have rotted. you are supposed to plant them on their side. if you planted flat then perhaps start again

mine took about 10 days to germinate and that seemed like ages. might be worth digging around in the pot to see if they've rotted, if they were too deep etc.

then if you get some more try again - and better luck this time!

It's hard to believe they would rot simply because they were on their sides; this is the way most flat seeds are going to end up! Had the seed been kept too warm, or were the pots not warm enough?

Try some seed between damp kitchen roll in a plastic box. place on windowsill and check every few days. you will see if the seed is ok and a white tap root appears first. Then you can plant them up tap root down in pot and off they go.

Marketmore went in last Sat (14th) and all came up within 10 days.  They're on a moderately sunny window sill.

Are they fresh seeds?

From memory I seem to recall starting mine off last year with my pumpkins in the airing cupboard. Need to keep checking them, perhaps twice a day and at the first sign of germination, whip 'em out onto the window sill.

Mines came up pretty quick.  Have about 10 plants of marketmore and Superbel F1.  Alll about 1-2 ft high and ready to go out.

Planted mines 10/03/07 and 23/03/07

thanks teresa - will try the kitchen roll - kids will also find that a bit more interesting than just putting in soil and waiting.....
seeds are fresh - but may also invest in some more
