Title: Killing a tree stump
Post by: dandelion on April 24, 2007, 20:03:53
There's a tree stump in the middle of my allotment. It must have been a medium sized tree once (not sure what kind); it had been cut to ground level before I took on the plot. The stump resprouted several vigorous branches which I have now sawed off . Here's my problem: I am planning to grow courgettes in this area. There's no way I can dig up this stump but I want it dead! Is it safe to use brushwood killer considering I will grow courgettes just a few feet away? And what method should I use? I was thinking of drilling several holes, fill these with brushwood killer (should I mix it with something?), then seal the holes with cork.

You can use "Deep Root" (ammonium sulphamate), follow the instructions on the back of the packet. You can get it in most garden centres, Wilkos etc.  :)

If you drill your holes around the outer edge and fill with your desired herbicide it should do the the trick.Any idea what tree  it is?

I can only imagine that you are not allowed to light fires there? Because back home, a stump (even a massive eucalyptus stump) would be burned out and then pulled. That is permanent!

Why didn't I think of that? I made a bonfire just a few feet away from the stump; should have done it on top of the stump ::).

Ah, it's the old two-heads-are-better-than-one idea  ;) Imagine if we all got together and did a masive garden, it would be the world's best  ;D (could do with a few spare hands meself)
