A friend of mine bought me some seed from a plant sale /seed swap of different types of agapanthus (white, blue and a dwarf blue). From the packet it says that they were saved last year and to sow them on moist compost before Autumn 2008 for best results.
But doesn't say when, or wehter they need heat to germinate etc. If anyone has grown agapanthus from seed before, then any advice welcomed. I was just going to sow them onto moist compost in the cold frame in mid May and cross my fingers. ???
Thanks
Suzanne
Sow seed now in pots/trays of seed compost, and maintain a minimum temperature of 13°C (55°F)
Germination should take around 3-4 weeks.
Flowering may take two or three years!
They flower better if [pot bound'
Mine are 3 years old now....still keep loving them babies. Wonder if they will reward me this year.
EJ, they should give you something this year! Mine took 3 years, only very small flowers first year. Are 5 years old now, still babies!! Got to pamper some things though, like hostas, they're totally worth it. 8)
The annoying thing about agapanthus is having to mollycoddle it. In Nice it grows in massed beds in poor conditions.
Mine are in pots and growing well again. The same pots for 4 years and they are well and truly pot-bound as they like it. Next year I will split one into 4 and double my collection.
