Title: Do I let my new chickens out?
Post by: Henny Penny on April 22, 2007, 08:31:52
Please could you help.
I fetched 2 new chickens yesterday and when I got them home I let them out in their big run at the top of the garden.
They  loved it but when it came to early evening, I   tried to get them into their new home and of course they didn't want to go in.
Someone on our allotments has told me this morning that I should keep them in their house for a few days and then open the hatch and they will just come out.
Once they know where to come out they know where to go back.
Thanks

Chickens are a bit 'pea-brained' so it might take them a while to get used to it  ;D That's why you never see them in circuses :D

I spend ages chasing my hens if I try locking them up prior to dusk in daylight as they dont want to go in either. If I go down to lock them away as it is getting dark - they are always inside, takes me 30 seconds to close the doors & put the lock on.

Thanks for your replies.
I have been up to check on them and have opened their hatch.
They have not ventured out but keep peeping through the hole. I thought I would leave them to it now.
They have pellets and water in there so I'm sure they will come out when they're ready.
My brother has 5 year old, twin grandaughters and they have named the new chooks - Angelina and Alice.
