As it looks like im going to have a few - well a lot - of spare carnations this year ive read somewhere that they can be grown as house plants and pretty much flower all yea round if kept warm.
has anyone any experience of this?
Depends what type you have!
Perpetual varieties are best for indoors;

they are Carnation Chabaud Enchantment

are these any use - they are currently about 3 1/2" and doing well in an unheated greenhouse.
This flower stuff is all new to me so any help appreciated
