hi - ive bought some red drum cabbage plug plants, they seem sturdy and healthy about six inches high. My question is this - Ive never grown cabbages before and they look very open , by this I mean they have a two inch stem and then four inches of leaves, if they are going to form a solid ball of cabbage do I need to plant them deep to cover the stems or will everything thicken up including the stem ? help much appreciated .
I plant mine to the first true leaves and press in hard around. A ball will form, I didn't know anything last year and my cabbages were ok. Watch out for the cabbage butterfly so cover with a net or 2.
Bury as much stem as you can... they will make more as the old outer leaves die back over the season and still end up on a stem! a bit of earthing up as they grow can help... Just eating the last of last years red cabbage in salads now..
