I'd love to get a globe artichoke going in my allotment. If anyone has a piece of offshoot or root too spare, I'll gladly swap for home saved seed (August 2006):
- sorrel
- leek Musselburgh
- wild sweet pea (found in garden, pretty, slightly smaller pink flowers than cultivated)
- poppy (normal red)
Of one, or a mix of the above.
Thanks
pg
I haven't got any offshoots or roots, but I have some seeds if they are any use.
Hi, I don't think it is a root, not like the Jerusalem one. I have about 8 plants, they die back in the cold and come back again in the spring but they don't multiply. There is always 8 plants.
I could well be wrong however.
I grew mine from seed, started them in pots, planted them when a decent size.I have never put down and winter mulch or protection and mine bounce back every year.

Thanks for the replies and offer of seeds.
I was particularly after a root sucker, or unwanted bit, as I am impatient! Plus my windowsills are full of everything else started from seed.
I've seen a globe artichoke in a previous neighbours garden and it looked most impressive. My gardening books seem to show that the plants gradually increase the size of their clump by throwing up suckers - it seems this may not always be so after reading your replies.
I believe you're right, though I haven't grown it; the offshoots are usually called 'slips'. I'm trying cardoon (which is related) from seed this year.
PG, I have never looked that close at my plants. I am going there shortly, If I see something that I can easily remove I will send you a couple. I will get back to you later. XX Jeannine
PS I have just looked in my trusty ancient gardening book and it says.
Use offsets(rooted suckers) taken from a high yielding plant (mine are). Must be 9 inches tall and have roots,so I will take a look
Thanks guys.
pg, tried as I promised. The ground around by globes is very hard as I usually leave them to it. Anyway,I found what looked like a shoot thing and I got it out it doesn't have a lot of roots on though. I also found 1 plant much smaller than the others and I think it was an odd one that was moved earlier in the year,so I dug it out as well,It has about 6 inches of new growth and a large tuber underneath so I suspect it is a 2 year old plant, not a shoot ,and that it is behind the others due to it's move,I think that will be OK. PM me your address and I will put both in the mail on Monday. If anyone knows a fool proof way of shifting them let me know tonight and I will have another go. XX Jeannine
Jeannine,
Thanks very much for the offer of the'shoot thing' and the plant, either would be great. I 'm afraid I as my allotment is in the early stages, I have no spare plants to offer in return, but I do have spare seeds of vegetables and flowers. I have sorted through my seeds and found others not listed in my first post you may wish to try - I'll happpily post these to you. I'll PM with my details and a list of seeds. Please pick as many as you wish, they are all spare.
Left yesterday XX Jeannine
