Is it possible to keep onion sets for next year?
Mr Fothergill's sent mine late this year and they only turned up a few days ago. I had bought some from somewhere else so I don't have a lot of room left.
Can I keep the sets for later this year? Are onions ok to put in over winter? Any tips on storage?
I doubt they will keep until next year.
You could still plant them without taking up too much space. Make a shallow drill and then place the sets in it nearly touching. Cover them in as normal. As the plants grow you can thin alternate ones out early and use as spring onions and later ones in salads or cooking. Eventually you will have thinned the bulbs to about 4-6" apart and these can be left to mature.
You could try keeping them in the fridge (not freezer) till next Jan/Feb
Not guaranteed but it should stop them sprouting!
Get them out again in Jan and try one or two to see if the experiment worked if it didn't this will give you time to purchase new stock!
Best of luck!!
