Title: Radishes
Post by: Shelle on April 19, 2007, 20:56:48
A quick question about radishes. I planted some on 31/03/07 in a pot (with parsnips), and they sprouted 2 weeks ago and then grew quite quickly. The leaves look lovely and healthy, but tonight I have had a little dig around one or two to see if they were ready to harvest yet and I could not seem to find any?

How long are the stems from the leaves to the actual radish?

I have a feeling mine may have bolted with the lovely weather last weekend? Had intended to do a second sowing this weekend, but may end up being my first sowing instead!

You shouldn't have to dig to see the radishes. 2 weeks is very early (radishes are normally ready after 4 to 5 weeks) and they certainly can't have bolted 2 weeks after germination! Just keep them well watered and thin them if they are growing too close to each other, then wait another 2 weeks.

I am not quite sure why you planted radishes and parsnips in a pot together. By the time the radishes are ready, the pasrsnips will gave germinated and will be damaged by pulling out the radishes. Maybe they are all too close together.

The usual advice is plant rows of parsnips which are slow to germinate with rows of radishes between to mark the rows and produce a rapidly maturing crop.

Although they are in the same pot I planted them in where the parsnips werent.  The parsnips I planted in 5 small dots (only 2 or 3 seeds) like the number 5 on a dice, and in the remaining gaps I planted the radishes.

I was told you do this even in containers inter planting, so maybe I have misunderstood???

I cant use the ground hence the pots unfortunately.  First I have tried this after years of wanting to but having no ground to plant in, and thus no experience.

Anyway, I suspect I have been a little premature and need to wait a couple more weeks!
