Title: Pumpkin Germination
Post by: Stevens706 on April 18, 2007, 16:17:01
Hi I sowed 2 pumpkin seeds on 6th April and they haven’t germinated, everything else sowed then germinated, this is my first attempt at pumpkins, can anyone tell me if they should have come through by now.

Thanks a lot in advance for any replies.

can't be far off I wouldn't have thought???

have you had a rummage in the pot to see if anything is happening, or is it just me that is that impatient?

Seem to remember mine taking around about 10 days or so last year.

I think it can take longer than that. i planted loads on the 8th and only one small bit of green is poking through.

check theyre the correct depth, and maybe check the ideal temperature for germination for your variety. Just in case.

I planted mine on 29th March in heat and by 30th March it had 2 leaves. If yours is in heat then try again. Mine is ready to go outside under cover. I am determined to beat my first effort of 113lb last year.

I will do a pumpkin page tonight.

As Daisymay said have a dig and see if there is a root attached, did you plant the seed on its edge not flat, have you any heat under them.

I did a pumpkin page when A4A was off air.

See the plant 7 days from sowing on :-

I sow my seed between damp kitchen towel in a lunch box. In a few days you see the tap root ( from pointed end of seed) then I just plant up either in loo rolls with compost or pots. This way I know the plant should grow seeds that dont grow get thrown away.

Thanks for all your advice,

I had a peek one is showing roots, but I’ve probably killed it by disturbing it, so I have done what Teresa recommended (placed about 6 in kitchen paper, in a plastic box in the airing cupboard) and I will let you know what happens.

But have done all large seed this way

Chillies and peppers worked as well I just love having a go.
