last year, we sowed parsnips three times and had none come up..we planted our garlic and overwintering onions in the bed..looked this morning and we have at least a dozen parsnips coming up around them..the only problem I can see is when we harvest the onions, it will disturb the parsnips, anyone else had this? :)
Not yet but it might happen!

What a shame, I have just dug over my parsnip bed which was the same last year, the seeds will probably be too deep now. A real bonus having them come through this year, especially when you think how the seed should always be fresh! :)
I had a bed full but fortunately they poked their heads out early. I take it you never turned that bed over and found parsnips re-shooting before you replanted
I would have thought that the onions and garlic are too shallow rooted to disturb the parsnips.
I should have a go and leave afew, you may have discovered something!
I always play safe and sow my parsnips in empty toilet rolls, 3 to a roll and pick out the weakest. Then plant out the parsnips in the roll, the roll will gradually rot away. I've also used seed that is 3 years old and had no probs with germination, which makes me wonder if you do need fresh seed!!
Dizzymac :)
I had a couple growing where they were last year.
pre germinated them this year on kitchen paper and got 45 so we're getting lots this year,

no, we just mulch our beds so the ground was undisturbed :)
the reason i asked is because parsnip foliage dies back under the ground then shoots away again when the soil warms up. I would say that there is a parsnip underneath each of the shoots.
no, these are brand new shoots, nothing there, I checked, they look just like the ones we have in the raised bed, unless someone's playing a trick and spread new seed over the bed..very unlikely on our allotments ;)
If thats the case you may have come up with a new method of catch cropping LOL
Harvested the last of my parsnips today. ;D ;D ;D
I moved a couple of last years parsnips that I missed today to a place where they can go to seed in peace. Free organic seed next year - from selected large roots - the smallies have been composted. Would have been tempted to eat them but thought they would be woody :-\
Well I am amazed at mine. Last year I got a good crop of parsnips, and finished eating them all last month. And they were gorgeous! My almost favourite crop.
Anyway there were two rows of teeny tiny parsnips shooting up all bunched together... I must have forgotten to thin them out and just ignored those rows. So I thought, as I was just planting this year's seeds, should I just tip them on the compost. But I didn't.
Decided instead to dig all the clumps up and they had all their roots intertwined and I separated them and replanted just over a month ago and they are growing like crazy and twice the height of any I planted last year. So hopefully these are going to be an early bumper crop.
And if they taste lovely too, think I will do that again next year, just leave one row all bunched together till the spring! Lin
I planted parsnips about 3 or 4 weeks ago and still no sign of them
Have they failed to germinate?
I love parsnips, you can't get them here. My friend gets huge ones, really sweet and I don't think he does anything special :(
Any particular planting tips?? I have some Guernesey Demi-long variety.
If you're growing parsnips on for a second year, the chances are they'll shoot up and flower rather than producing a crop.
I had a few set seed last autumn, I've left them to grow and we'll see what happens.
At the very least more free seed for next year.
Tender and True, btw.
i tried to germinate my parsnips on kitchen paper left for weeks and kept kitchen paper wet nothing happened got fed up with waiting, so we planted them in toilet rolls and hey they have all come up, think nect time just go with the toilet roll method. :o
Patience and they will come. ;D ;D ;D
I'm gonna take some pics on saturday :)
Just come back from the lottie and the parsnips have surfaced after 15 days. ;D ;D ;D
Have planted out my seeds about 5 weeks ago have some cming through but not too sure
have they got a fluted edge leaf?
MS will lookout out for you photos as I may be all excited over a fews weeds and not parsnips :( >:( ;)
yep, bb, fluted leaves, quite pretty, just found some coriander self seeded as well..our plot's going to have some exciting beds this year ;D
these are pictures of some of the parsnips and coriander coming up between the beetroot and daffodils, I can't find it in me to pull them out :)
