Title: Onion Sets
Post by: SueSteve on April 14, 2007, 22:05:12
Hi,
We have only had an allotment for a few days! So have only bought enough seed etc for the small veg bed in the garden.
Anyway, we would like to grow onions, but do you think we can find any onion sets? All the garden centres have sold out! Too late they say, some sold out 2 weeks ago, some 6 weeks ago. We have some seed, but as its our first time we wanted the easier option of sets!
Does anyone have any spare, or is it really to late to be planting them?
Cheers,
Sue

Thanks for the offer Saddad!
I have just posted a wanted on freecycle, so will see how that goes.
So roughly how many onionsets do you get in a kilo!!! Enough to plant up the entire allotment I'd imagine!
Thanks, I'll be in tough if the freecycle wanted fails!
Sue ;)

If all else fails I have a bag you, or anyone else can have. New unopened and in good condition. They are going on the compost heap if no one wants them as I havn't got room for them.

our branch of Wilkinsons still have some, if you have a Wilkies.  Last year bulbs, onions and garlic bags reappeared in our garden centre in bargain bins at the end of this month......we had no room for them

I have a few leftovers from planting mine out yesterday:

Red Baron (red)
Brunswicker (red)
Sturon (white)
Stuttgarter (white)

that you're more than welcome to, otherwise they'll be composted.
PM me your address if you'd like them, postage shouldn't be much!

I've got a few leftovers which I was going to offer on here then I read the thread about just planting them really close together - like touching - then you can harvest them as soon as they come up as spring onions.  Now have a row of red and one of white - better than wasting on the compost heap [not that compost is wasting but you know what I mean - I hope  :)]

Don't compost them. They make great early spring onions. Just put the spares in a row, touching and in a few weeks you have got great spring onions!

really pleased to read that you can plant onion sets close together (touching) and then use as spring onions - going to do that with some I have over  :)

read such helpful and interesting info on here 8)

Thanks everyone, I look forward to receiving my parcels :)
Another 4-6 hours and I should have my Onion, Carrot, Radish, Leek, and Parsnip bed ready for planting ;) Hopefully Saturday (as I work Thurs and Fri).
