Title: Is it too soon for garlic leaves to be dying off?
Post by: kitten on April 14, 2007, 20:24:23
Just wondering when garlic leaves should start yellowing & falling over, as ours are doing that now.  Are we doing something wrong, or is this normal?  Any advice gratefully received x

hi kitten,

the garlic i planted in oct is doing the same, but the garlic i planted 5-6 weeks ago is fine.

When did you plant your?

I dont know if mine is ready either but i have noticed some new green growth up on one so my feeling is that there not ready yet, and might just need a feed.

The mild winter seems to have allowed garlic rust to form early. Some of my galric leaves have fallen foul of this. I don't know whether it will work or not but I noticed whilst at Ryton they were adding potash to fend off leek rust. So a couple of days ago I did the same to my garlic. Although without rain I think I will need to water it in.

My autumn planted garlic is usually ready for lifting  June/july.

Garlic should be ready in June or July, depending on the variety, not when it was planted. Wait till about 10% of the stems have fallen over, then lift and let it dry.

Mine started yellowing at the edges so I gave them a liquid feed of maxicrop -as advised for onions on another thread. Looking happier now.

I think it's been so dry quite a lot of plants are misbehaving.
