Title: Is this unusual?
Post by: Hot_Potato on April 13, 2007, 12:31:10
have just opened a packet of Dobies Tomato F1 'tumbler' seeds - astonished and disappointed to find only 8 seeds in a sealed pack inside :o

I paid £1.10 for the seed packet from my local horticultural club and realise that it will still work out very cheap per plant but was expecting so many more, wanting some to keep and some to give away. Just hope they all germinate.

Are they maybe rather special?

Hi,

I think this is probably usual from big seed companies. I think most people would agree that you seem to get less seed for your money these days.

I have seen prices for "Santa" tomatoes 6 seeds for £2.95!!!  :o

Thats actually not too bad, but i would get them from Alan Romans seeds, he sells Garten Perel red tumblers for 50p for 25 seeds.

thanks for that info - I used 'Gartenperle' last year very successfully which were in fact 'free' with G.Y.O. mag (which I don't take any longer) but thought this year I should support my local horticultural club - hence the different variety.

Might send off to Alan Romans tho for more of G.P.

Tumbler seeds are always like this, 6,8 or 10 depending on whose, this is why I buy most of my seeds overseas where I can get large quantities of  most my favourites

In the case of Tumblers  which are expensive seed.I can get 1 gram of seeds for about £15, this is about 330 seeds.

I prefer to buy local but I have to go with the cheapest prices when they are this low.

I can get about 2000 seeds of most of the Brandywines for about £10.

last year Thompson and Morgan sold Radicchio Versuvio - 40 seeds £1.99, this year Radicchio trevisa - 6000 seeds £1.99 = last years price of £298.50. Good old Seeds of Italy forcing prices down

The price is always higher for F1 seed (Santa is also an F1), presumably because it is more expensive to produce the seed.

PS As a Santa fan I've suggested we do a bulk buy from a wholesaler like Moles and divi them up amongst us

I would agree Barnowl that the hybrids are usually more expensive but this is still a very high price and I frankly resent paying it for the packaging.

Grouping together makes sense.

I have just come offline after buying some seeds overseas. I bought 1 pound of corn seeds  for the price I would have got  a packet for here and I bought 2 hybrid tomatoes, one was a longkeeping one and the other a very highly rated cherry called Sugary, I paid $4.95 about £2 60 for 500 seeds.

I also bought several squash  which I bought in 100 lots for the price of a 6 seed pack here.

Buying in bulk and sharing is a good idea;

Moles is not bad value

Sungold 100sds-£9.15

Tumbler-100sds-£7.20

Santa-seems to be missing

And cucumbers are a rip off-I sell my plants in a 5inch pot cheaper than many seed companies offer seeds

Moles do a few varieties at £9.20 for 25 seeds

The time to buy seeds is at the end of the season when they are half price or less. Most of them are in sealed packets. Obviously fresh seeds are better. I planted 24 corn seeds 3 weeks ago and 14 germinated. They were last years.
Being clever I planted 12 pots with 2 each 4 days ago (new seeds)- they all germinated!

just thought I'd tell you that the 8 seeds I sowed on the 13th April were all germinated by yesterday morning (17th)  ::) isn't that quick?

They spent the previous few days in my airing cupboard. 5 of them look very leggy but are now 'greening up' sitting on a window sill here next to the computer - no sunshine tho as I don't get any at all this side of the building that I live in.
