Hello all just to let you know that l dug my first root of potatoes today for dinner, they were from a row l risked setting in Febuary under fleece. I have never dug potatoes this early before in the year and am well chuffed by the results, justed wished l could have invited you all round for dinner to sample them. Its what makes growing your own produce all worth while. Looking forward to many more crops to come. :-*
Lucky you, we never seem to get anything worthwhile until start of July - but then we plant end March! You've really whetted my appetite now.
Yummy Richard, just lay an extra place for me at tomorrow's dinner ;D
Variety?? = Tim
Well done you!
How lovely! Lashings of butter and nice fresh mint? :P :)
It will be mid to the end of July for me, have one consolation.........I'm still eating last years maincrop...........getting a bit soft now but OK for chips.
Still got to wait but i saw today that my early ones where in bloom,so it cant be long before i can dig my own.
Sorry Tim forgot to mention the variety they were Rocket, planted on Feb 9 under fleece. ;)
Just to remind folk that you DO NOT have to wait till they flower.
No sign of a flower here??
But see next pic - HOW do I post them together on the in-house attach facility?? Please!! = Tim
SO - Red Duke of York - planted 8 March.
Hubby got impatient and wanted spuds for the salad. So, went and dug up one Arran Pilot plant which was put out beginning of April. Got just 200g of spuds.
Hope that wasn't my fault?? = Tim
I've had a couple of boilings and oh boy! the wonders of growing your own. :P :P :P
I took a chance and planted first earlies on 4 April (Central Scotland), having warmed the soil with polythene for a fortnight. Covered the site with about 6 inches of semi-rotted compost. Dug the first last Sunday. They were small, and the yield was minimal, 2 good or 3 meagre portions from 2 plants, but flavour was superlative - that's what I grow them for anyway.
I'm going to dig some more this weekend and see how much difference a wet week has made.
Sue
Of course it was your fault Tim :P :P ;D :P :-*
Sue - mine were planted on the 5th April.
