 Hi Dicky,
I had a packet given to me last year, I sowed them a bit late, June I think, they grew well  & I planted them out on the lottie. but because I was too late I had no aubergines. This year from the same packet I have sown 2 lots & neither  have germinated  >:(  Moral of the story, get fresh seeds & sow them early 8)

                                                                              Adrian.

Hi Dicky, I'm growing these this season.  I sowed them early March, kept them at home to germinate, then as soon as they arrived I transplanted them to the lottie greenhouse (unheated).  They would be growing faster if they were at home, but I'm worried about them going leggy / weak and putting on too much growth. Think I sowed 4 in total, will need to check if the mouse had any.

Sow them early and keep them warm. The only place I can germinate them is on top of the hot water tank, and then they need to be kept warm on a windowsill through the spring. They'll survive without heat but they won't grow. Mine won't be going to the allotment till the middle of next month or so, possibly later if it's cold.

I'm growing Mini Bambino from Alan Romans seed and you should see the size of them!

Still seedlings but looking really good.  Took a while to germinate.

I am this year....think they may have come from one of the swap shop parcels.  Mine all germinated very quickly, which for me is a miracle as I have a real problem getting aubergines to grow.  Conservatory, in cells, regular cheap and cheerful potting compost.

I grew a couple of Red Egg plants last year. Most disappointing!  The plants grew tall and very sturdy but the fruits were very small and not of much use - in my opinion.

Prefer the long thin ones like Brinjal Hybrids... lots of bi-colours as well, although not red to be fair..

I got a free packet of Red Egg from somewhere last year, so I'm having a go with them this year. Managed to get them to germinate OK, they are currently in my cold greenhouse, potted on a couple of weeks ago. I only tried aubergine for the first time last year, had good crops in the greenhouse, lousy outside even with the good summer! Also trying a white variety (Mohican?), and the same purple stripey  I tried last year Listade De Gandia.

Are all aubergines tricky?

I'm trying Little Finger and Calliope, 100% for Little Finger , no show for the Calliope.

(Also Thai Pea Aubergine doing a no show, but I suspect the name is misleading and they're not actually related.)

I sowed Enorma too late last year (or didn't keep them  warm enough)- got two fruit from three plants! so I've started earlier and am keeping them in the kitchen.

as i usually find aubergine seed hard to germinate, i sowed loads including a whole packet of old Black Beauty seed- of course they have ALL germinated ::) ::)
I've also got loads of De Barbentane
                                  Baby Bell and
                                  Rosa Bianca

didn't use a propagator this year, just my bedroom windowsill, just need to find them homes to go to :P /shades x

My aubergines germinated well this year too all seeds sown. Will they be ok to just put on the allotment as I don't have a greenhouse?

If you have a really warm sheltered spot they might be worth trying outside, with a bit of cover of some sort if possible; anyone has success with outdoor aubergines? :-\

TeeGee, I find moneymaker aubergine the best for me.  Good sized fruits, and enough for me.  This year, miracle of miracles, nearly all of my aubs have germinated.  God knows what I will do with them all if they produce!
