Title: Chickpea experiment
Post by: MacArthur Park on April 12, 2007, 11:34:39
Hi all.
I'm trying to grow chickpeas this year as a Garden Organic members' experiment. Anyone out there doing it too? Thought we could compare notes. :)

Forgive me but what is the point of growing chickpeas which are cheap to buy?
Can they be eaten green? Is there a delicious dish that I should taste. I am not being facetious, I just don't know.
I will give them a go if it is recommended, and if a failure they can always go on my compost heap.

New compost page tonight :-

Predominantly the sod factor... at three tins to the pound my Houmous will come from a can  but what if... they taste so much better fresh?

My allotment neighbour grew chickpeas for the first time last year. She got a huge crop and said 'home grown' tasted much better.

Hey the more the merrier !! ;D

Yes they can be eaten green, so I'm going to try them. Bit like green soya - the latest fad food!

Also organic at 75p a tin makes growing them cheaper!!

If you're into sprouting, they are said to be even healthier. I've made them into a spag sauce by throwing sprouted chickpeas into a basic tomato sauce and cooking for an extra 10 mins.

Can you use ordinary chick peas from a packet?  If so i might try a few.  :)

Marymary, the ones I sprouted were just from a packet, so give it a go. With the weather the way it is (31c in Dewsbury, West Yorks!! :o ;D) they could do brilliantly.
