Hi all.
I'm trying to grow chickpeas this year as a Garden Organic members' experiment. Anyone out there doing it too? Thought we could compare notes. :)
;D Me! MAPark and the spider survey,
yes will compare notes, haven't started yet :P/ shades
Great! It's good to have company. :D
I was thinking of sprouting mine next week and planting out around the 21st - how about you?
Spiders? How did I miss that one?! Are you growing them???!! ;D
:)
better go look at the info, will get back to you/ shades x
Yep - me too - but not the spiders!!!!!!!!!!!
Louise
Hey - it's an itsy bitsy world!! :D
What the heck is the spiders experiment then?! :-\
:D
Biodiversity Survey on Spiders,
I study insects and spiders, take lots of photos in my spare time so its ideal when I'm at the lottie to do this survey,
if you win best photo you get a bottle of organic wine ;D/shades x
I missed it but will follow your progress with interest ladies... I like a good Houmous.

Forgive me but what is the point of growing chickpeas which are cheap to buy?
Can they be eaten green? Is there a delicious dish that I should taste. I am not being facetious, I just don't know.
I will give them a go if it is recommended, and if a failure they can always go on my compost heap.
New compost page tonight :-

Predominantly the sod factor... at three tins to the pound my Houmous will come from a can but what if... they taste so much better fresh?
:-\
Can I do the experiment too with you please XX Jeannine
My allotment neighbour grew chickpeas for the first time last year. She got a huge crop and said 'home grown' tasted much better.
Hey the more the merrier !! ;D
Yes they can be eaten green, so I'm going to try them. Bit like green soya - the latest fad food!
Also organic at 75p a tin makes growing them cheaper!!
If you're into sprouting, they are said to be even healthier. I've made them into a spag sauce by throwing sprouted chickpeas into a basic tomato sauce and cooking for an extra 10 mins.
Just realised, I don't have chick pea seeds, those are gabanzos, I have cow peas and black eyed peas. XX Jeannine

Can you use ordinary chick peas from a packet? If so i might try a few. :)
Marymary, the ones I sprouted were just from a packet, so give it a go. With the weather the way it is (31c in Dewsbury, West Yorks!! :o ;D) they could do brilliantly.
:o have we started? /shades x
Right I shall try & sprout some from the larder and go from there. :)
Angle Shades, mine went in the seed sprouter this morning - will keep you all updated. :D
