Got a shop bought onion here that has been left so long it has sprouted long green tops. What will happen if I plant it in compost?

cheers

I had a load of leftover onions from the harvest last year, and i planted then in a large tub for an unusual onion flower display later this year.

Onions are normally biennials - they flower the 2nd year using the stored energy in their bulb from the 1st year.

I left a couple of cloves of elephant garlic on my allotment when I first took it on, and they flowered, and I left them and they flower for me every year.  The bees love them and I love them!
