Hi
I was wondering whether I should be seeing any growth from my grapevine yet. It is outdoors, and it just looks like a twig at the moment, not a sign of life to be seen. Am I just being impatient ::)

Hello Sweet Pea
Mine also looks pretty dead - although I did tranplant it onto the lottie last month. Fingers crossed we are just being impatient.

Hi Sweet Pea,
I'm a bit further south but my outdoor vine ( 2nd full year) is not showing any growth as yet. My neighbours in a greenhouse ( the vine - not Brian) is only just breaking bud.
Hope that helps.
Hi Sweet Pea-plenty of time yet. My indoor grape has only been showing life for a few days
Errrm, South East here, mine is against a south facing wall and it's breaking into leaf with gay abandon now it's had some real warmth and sunshine. It does seem to have happened all of a sudden though, so don't despair ;)
I have two vines, one on the allotment with its first leaves and the other in my garden with what looks like a disaster. All the buds appear to be hollow as if something has eaten them. It has never happened before, but as the wood is still green I am holding my breath. Has anyone any ideas what it could be?
I may have to resort to insecticide.

Hi All and thanks for the replies. It seems that I am just being a little too impatient. ::) I'm just so excited, but I think as it was a bargain 2.99 from Woolies I'm slightly worried it won't come to anything. I guess I'll just have to wait a while longer to see if it is actually alive.

Mine has just burst into leaf as well - like Eeemaggie I'm in the South - and by the way, mine is a 'Bargainus Woolius' variety too, which I've had for about three years now - and it was bought as a 'dead stick'!
;D
ours is a Woolies one too,it is just about to burst forth (west mids)
it is about eight years old ! and is absolutly huge ,never cut it back
more grapes than even all the budgies could eat!
Mine is Black Amber and I can see the bunches of grapes forming already, but it is in a polytunnel. Others on the allotments that are in polytunnels have not shown any growth yet, think a lot depends on type
Mine looks dormant but isn't... I trimmed some spurs off last week and it kept dripping on me on the pew underneath where I sit for my evening beer.. no leaves yet but can see the buds swelling now.. (Regent)

Photo from August 05... Whereabouts in York are you sweet-pea? MIL is in Osbaldwick...
My 4 vines of unknown pedigree are just breaking bud now. I think they are governed more by soil temperature than anything else. Once they decide to grow there is no stopping them.
NW London.
I too have two Woolies Specials - sticks in the ground waiting to break! My vine at home is not much further advanced though - so not worried yet!

I'm in the south and leaves have appeared last week
Sweet pea
In York I wouldn't worry yet - we just went there on hols and back here in the south the trees are all lots further on than yours.
My own Pinot Noir grapevines are bursting but the Orion ones are still at closed up bud stage, so it may be as much to do with variety as latitude.
Hi there everyone, I have one in the greenhouse showing lot's of growth, ( south east) can't tell you the variety for My OH has forgotten what it was. It is green and seedless. I believe it is about 4 to 5 years of age. I was very dissappointed for last year lot's of grapes appeared unfortunately they were about the size of a 5p coin, I watered and feed it every week. So where did I go wrong?
My husband bought 6 of those Woolies Sauvignon blanc bargain "dead sticks" and thinks he is going to start a vinyard ! Bless him ! ::)
Rohaise :D
My Black Hamburg is just breaking in Hull.XX Jeannine
My Regent has broken today, outdoors in sunny Derby...

Maybe you didn't thin out the bunches enough?
yeah, both grape vines, (don't know either of the varieties), are getting leaves on ;D
my vine (transplanted last year to the allotment) started sprouting leaves last week - south facing against pallet compost bin.
