Title: parsnips
Post by: norfolklass on April 11, 2007, 15:02:40
first, chitting in the airing cupboard, took 5 days for the first 'tails' to appear,
now, in loo rolls in the plastic greenhouse in my garden.

the seeds are Gladiator F1 (from pass the parcel no 2, so thanks to whoever put those in ;)), Hollow Crown and Tender & True, and they germinated in that order.
have now got 70 parsnips in loo rolls ;D

Put 24 in loo-rolls over 2 weeks ago in my unheated greenhouse. Just poking through today. Gonna put the remainder in the ground tomorrow. See which produces best.

I've just gone and thrown mine straight into the ground 4 x 20' rows of 'Tender & True' and some 'White Gems'. Never thought to do them this way though.

How do you plant them on? hole filled with compost/ loo roll? or just hole with loo roll?

I'm assuming you get pretty much 100% return on the effort compared to the thinning process I may have to go through should mine even bother to come up in this dry weather.

Interested to know.

Gonna put the hole loo role in the ground as it will decompose. I will slit the side first to allow it to expand more easily in the ground.

Makes sense really. Too late this year for my parsnips but I may give this method a go on some of my other seeds as I have a few old packets. Thanks for the info.
