 Hi olive,  :D
marigolds near tomatoes, allegedly they deter whitefly, nasturtiums, attract cabbage white butterflies, proven fact from my own experience, therefore plant them somewhere near brassicas & hope they lay their eggs on the nasturtiums & not your lovely cabbages.  Poached egg plant, no idea ??? ??? I understand they are for attracting hoverflies &  are also  used as a green manure.

                                                                 Adrian.

As a doctor, most things that I do at work are based on the results of clinical trials if possible.
Over the years I have read extensively and watched Gardeners World and no trials that would stand up to rigourous scrutiny appear to have been done.
As far as I am concerned my flowers occupy a flower bed in the allotment with no interplanting.  After all, they do compete for food and moisture!

Place marigolds near your carrots as they deter carrot fly.

poached egg plants are planted  around fruit bushes and fruit trees to  attract bees to pollinate the blossom / shades x

Strong smelling tagetes marigolds are the recommended ones for carrot interplanting. I have found nasturtiums good near broad beans as well as near brassica. Limnanthes and other flowers attract beneficial insects that will feast on the bad guys that are eating your veg.

I don't really look on this as a science, just something that brightens up the plot and seems to work for me. ;)

Nasturiums will also attract blackfly - so could be 'sacrifice plants' to keep blackfly off something else?  Tasty petals though, so don't sacrifice them all  ;D

as you can see, we plant marigolds with toms, borage& nasturtiums(self seed) to attract hoverflies and things to knock off the nasties, pot marigolds for creams and things, let coriander go to seed in the poly, attracts goodies in, french marigolds everywhere and sweet peas with the runners, to bring in the bees , also limnanthes(poached egg plant) around the fruit trees to bring in pollinators,
even on 'how to be a gardener', last night, Alan Titchmarsh was extolling the virtues of companion plants  :)
