Post by: Mrs T on April 07, 2007, 08:59:56
Hi - Can you advise me please - I want to plant some spuds in my garden, however, I get lots of mushroom type fungi growing in the soil, is it safe to plant edible stuff here?
Thanks

Sounds like your soil is a bit acidic/sour/wet/shaded or a combination of some or all of these could you give us a bit more info.

Whats going through my mind is your soil is a bit acidic the cure being the addition of lime BUT!! potatoes do not like lime.

Get back to us with a bit more info on the soil condition.

Hi - Last year there was a huge Laurel Bush there, had it removed, the stump is rotting in the ground & I added loads of homemade compost to the soil and pelleted manure.  Its in full sun for most of the day.

the stump is rotting in the ground........I think this might be the cause of your 'fungi'

I would say brush off the fungi and go ahead and plant your potatoes, I think if anything can compete with the fungi potatoes will!!
