I use them as cloches but also as protection for plants that will be vulnerable to slug and snail damage. Tasty little lettuces and brassica for example.

Fabulous! Have lots of salad leaves planned !

Any ideas for 2 dozen loo roll tubes? I have NO idea why I saved them but I seem to recall they are handy for SOMETHING?

Yes I use them for parsnips but I hadn't thought of sweetcorn. What a great idea! Peas I sprout in a tray and then drop each sproutling into its hole.

gonna cut the 2 litre pop bottles in to 3,
1/small saucer-like bottom, fill with beer..slug pub
2/ top third, upside down, buried to water squash, toms, cucumbers etc
3/ middle bit, used to protect plants from slugs, e.g. sunflowers lettuce, transplanted beans  :)

I forgot, we also put half ones, with the lids on to stop us poking our eyes out on canes..sometimes we cut the pieces to protect the plants with scissors with a serrated edge, like dressmaking ones, that's supposed to put the slugs off eating your young brassicas  :)

bit hard to explain but i,ll have a go---- i cut the top and bottom off, cut the tube bit lengthwise making 3 strips  cut 2 slits app 2" from each end so that i can thread a stick through and put in the ground writing the veg i,m planting on the middle with a permanant marker

pinking shears, just remembered what the scissors are called..must be the age related deficiency  ;D..we make all our plant markers out of milk cartons, the six pint ones, never thought of using the pop bottles, marg, will look into it  :)

Take the screw cap off, cut the bottom off, turn upside down and half bury alongside pumpkins, marrows, tomatoes, cucumbers. this puts the water straight to the roots and stops the water running across the surface of the soil when watering.
cut the top off, cut the bottom off, slide up your arms for protection when pruning gooseberries and blackberries.

2l bottles also make good window sill propagators - the bottom bit can be a saucer to collect water, and the top with the lid off make a mini-mini-greenhouse.

I've got chilli seedlings in mine at the moment!

you put them on poles and cut flaps in the sides (eg 3 sides of a square and the pulled out) to act as wings to catch the wind and spin the things round. I find they rattle enough without the flaps and then can still be used as bottles
