Post by: Rohaise on April 05, 2007, 21:54:16
Only mine are cuttings that I have brought on in the greenhouse.  When can they go outside?  I have a species type one that is flowering it,s socks off. Today was really hot in Cornwall and I put them outside ..I have brought them in again this evening since now  there are clear skies . Rohaise .

I'm keeping mine underwraps until after the last frost (whenever that may be).

I lost one or two last year in a mini-g/h last year due to frost, so i keep them well fleeced up overnight atm.

The trouble with this hot spell is how cold it can get at night, which just proves we are still early April not June.

I think I would leave them out most of the time in your part of the world, just keep an ear out for frost reports and fetch them in if these are forecast.

Plus watch the watering, keep them relatively dry, it is saturated compost that causes most trouble i.e. it can hold the cold in!

Thankyou  both very much for your kind replies .   :) One more thing though .....If I am to keep them IN the greenhouse for a bit longer ,then do you think that I should nip out the flowers and buds until I put them out ? Thanks again Rohaise    :-\

Hi Rohaise.
Species Fuchsia's are a wee bit different to the normal kind and flower at different times depending on what type you are growing. all species need to be kept frost free like plenty of moisture and shade and warm humid atmosphere.
So i would not remove flowers, just enjoy them.
