I was having a bit of a burn up in the garden tonight, lit at about 8 o'clock, making sure there was no washing left out, and it had burnt quite fiercely for half an hour or so. As it was dying down, I started to add some more rubbish., and it started to smoke a bit, but there was no wind and the smoke was going straight up in the air.
At ten past nine, when the flames were no more than a foot or so high, the fire brigade turned up blue lights and all, and told me to put it out. Apparently it's not good neighbourly to burn rubbish after dark, when it's reasonably cool, because people are in bed with their windows open??? BUT it's OK to have a fire during the day.
We recently had some new houses built about 30 yards from the bottom of our garden. Well at least the nearest ones are. Formerly the site was a lorry park. Now we have to put up with car horns and screaming kids all day from over there. Housing Association houses, some rented and some part ownership, and a few flats for teenage single mums etc.
I can only presume somebody called them and complained. I have lived here for 18 years, and have always lit fires at night when I have needed to burn rubbish, never more than twice a year and normally only once, and no one has ever complained before.
Feel sorry for you. I could actually turn this post into a rant ( but i'll try not to).....
I think it's pathetic that after 18 years a fire brigade is needed to come and caution you. Not so long ago firemen were striking about pay etc. I know they do a fantastic job but to report to this type of call is silly.
New houses are being built around the clock to accomodate the intake of foreigners. i have no problem with that , but the problems by far out way the cons (another dissucsion which could take page after page).
Housing association houses are primed towards certain 'type' of people , flame me down if you like but that is the truth. Me and my family are living in a grond floor damp flat that would cost £63.00 per week to live in. Yet I see familys arriving in a posh coach with just four people in. I also regually (at least once a week) see a coach pull up full of immigrants who are moved in as if they were royalty.( people carrying the luggage etc)
I really feel for you quizz and wish you luck in the future.
P.S sorry for the rant but I really think our country is going down the pan. And when I reaad a post stating that 18 yrs after living there a fire brigade were called to a fire in the garden........................SAD!!!!!!
PPS Before anyone says Least they work.......
Yeah they do......for under the minimum wage . and offer a much cheaper labour.
Unfortunatly the brittish man with a family simply cannot live on a wage of such
!!!RANT OVER sorry
I think that people report the wrong type of incident. Unless you really think that smoke is being caused by anything other than a bonfire, then okay, phone the fire brigade but usually, a bonfire fire is obvious. Personally, I love a good bonfire every now and again. In most cases a couple of times a year would get rid of the debri, one of these times could be bonfire night so 50% less chance of a complaint. What about Summer Barbeques. At tea time and beyond, on a summers day there is a constant waft of the stuff they use to ignite the barbies then they smoke. It's just one of those things. Until a couple of years ago when my 'neighbour' gave up smoking. I couldn't bear to have my bedroom window open in the evening or the patio door open during the day. I get a bad throat when I am in a cigaretty environment, it irritates me so much. I can smell a f*g fom a mile away. I want to get one of those Chimineas which I presume would smoke. fancy sitting outside on a cool evening with a pot of tea, warming my toes on it, then of course the neighbours would be chatting about me. Oh to live in a field.............!

A friend of mine quoted last week that he may emigrate - reason was he said:
" He feels he would rather be a minority in someone elses country than his own, that way he may get treated better than he does here."
I was actually burning the remains of an old fence which I had to replace because the council would have charged me £500+ to do it (I am buying my house, but next door is still council owned and they said the fence had to be replaced and we are apparently (in Northampton at least) jointly responsible for fences between properties).
Then as that died down I was adding the trimmings from the brambles at the bottom of the garden, which I have been cutting back to enable a more secure fence to be built. There currently is only the brambles and no fence, and most of them are dead.
Baggieboy, I agree with you about the "certain type of people", and KTL, I quite often feel like that myself.
sorry nothing to do with bonfires but with "certain people" i,v heard several times lately from friends that they like the person they work with if only were treated the same and not allowed to get away with every thing just because they are not british (there i was afraid to use the f word) it is just making the situation worst
you realy can,t blame them for taking advantage i expect we would in their shoes
mini rant marg
If your council have a website, check their guidelines on bonfires, if they are the same as ours, they have to be under control, not annoying to neighbours, ( surely one or two a year is permissable) and not for burning rubber etc, you should be in your rights to tell the fire brigade to politely go away.
After the rubbish we've gone through, which included having cockroaches dropped through the door, I wonder where people are living where people apparently 'get away with things' because they're not British. It certainly isn't like that here. I could tell you a few tales about how recent immigrants are really treated too.
I don't subscribe to any prejudices at all - I hate everyone equally.
;D ;D ;D
I actually agree with theothermarg.
But on the subject of the bonfire, it was blooming ridiculous. Around here they regularly have bonfires during the day, I think they time them for when I have just put the washing out!
That is when I rant!!! >:(
At that time of night it is perfectly reasonable to have the odd bonfire and far better than during the day!
Please be aware that I will not tollerate racism on the site.
It appears that unless we are carefull that is where this thread is heading.
Let us agree,
Bonfires Good
Racism Bad
Dan
our site backs onto a row of houses. today my plot neighbours both had fires doing, one of the house owners stuck his head over the fence and started shouting about the fires and that he had his windows open and smoke was blowing into his garden. the fires were put out. about an hour later the guy lit a bbq!! what's the difference?!?
I'd have gone straight out and lit the bonfire again. I hate double standards.
I would have too. Blooming cheek of him!!!!
