Having had a lottie for 4 years I thought I would invest in some literature. I scoured the internet and having read some reviews purchased  "The Allotment Book" by Andi Cleverly. It is a very good book and would be essential reading for a 'newbie'. I personally found it wanting as there are more answers and tips available from the 'elder statesmen'  and there is always the internet. It was a good price and it may get opened occasionally when the dust get wiped off!

Agree with Jennys Gran

I did not like the programme but have found the book much more informative and well presented with loads of hints and excellent photos

I've found Joy Larkom's 'Grow your own Vegetables' invaluable. It doesn't have any pretty pictures but it's stuffed full of really useful info!

The chapter on food from the garden in John Seymour's "The Complete Book of Self Sufficiency" (first published 1976) is still my bible. Covers everything - vegetables, herbs, tree fruit, soft fruit, pests, tools, greenhouse growing, preserving - and not a raised bed in sight  ;D. Also chapters on food from animals, food from the wild, natural energy, oh and wine and cider making  ;)
