At the weekend we managed to get about 50% of our allotment holders together for a meeting to discuss the future of our allotments. We are concerned that they may be sold of for development if we don't get together a commitee to run them.
Our big problem is that we don't know who owns them! The land was given to the working men of Ilminster by a doctor in 1840, whose wife left it thus for all time.( the only info that I've found so far) The subs are paid every year, given to the Vicar(why??) and banked.!
How do we go about finding out more? Has anyone else used the Land Registry to find out ownership of land?
At the moment, there is over £1,000 in the bank account, and we don't want to lose it,we could do with some good fencing etc.
Any help please!!! ??? ???
try the land registry (like when you buy a house). the land might have a covanent on it which means it can't be sold/built on etc.
That's where I would start, the owner who bequeathed it would almost certainly have to have registered his intentions to stop any of his executors or heirs appropriating it as part of his estate, where there's a will there is a relative!
;D
I'd try asking the vicar as the money goes to him.
Also whose name is on the bank account and who is responsible for spending it?
Good luck with your association.
