Hello,
This is first post on here but I have been vegetable gardening for quite a while. Please can any experts give me some advice:
I have inherited an allotment which is in quite good condition. It has a small 1m x 2m x 2m(depth) compost heap.
The surface ten cms of the compost heap are fine but when I went to turn it and assess what was below I found that someone in the past had filled the thing with bird feathers (probably chicken or pidgeon). Anyway, the smell from the subsurface goo is putrid and the feathers have not decayed. The colour is a sort of light brown/tan/vomit colour.
Can anyone advise me on what to do? Also, how much of a health hazard is this?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Neil
dig out put in bin liner and burn - dont knoe about the health risk but imagine there is one - but not the kind of thing you want in your compost
Dead animals in you compost cant be good. If it was then people would be selling it. I agree with previous - burn it.
Get rid quick would be my answer too, deffinate health hazzard! :(
