Title: I need an evergreen climber!
Post by: amanda21 on April 02, 2007, 17:41:39
We're having a raised pond which is up against some trellis that hides our oil tank.  I need a climber to cover the trellis but something that won't drop it's leaves in the pond.  Can anyone give me some recommendations or ideas please?  Thanks

Even evergreens shed their leaves... they just do a few at a time, all the time...

How about a potato vine (Solanum jasminoides)? 'Album' has clusters of pretty white flowers, is very vigorous, and flowers from June to frost...

Not actual climbers but will grow against a trellis: pyracantha, Jasmine humile Revolution, Itea ilicifolia, Euonymus fortunei or Hydrangea seemanii.

My Mum's Clematis Armandii looks absolutely fab at the moment (must take a pic), it doesn't shed much.

Thank you for the thoughts.  I've seen that Clematis too DP - it is lovely so I'm definitely going for one of those at least.

armandii looks and smells great but it's very vigorous-needs a strong support and plenty of space when it gets going.

Can you get to the trellis to prune on the pond side, some of these climbers are a bit rigorous and they will be hanging in your pond if you cannot cut them back.

I have a clematis in place now - 'Apple Blossom' and also an evergreen jasmine "beelianum" I think it's called.  And yes I can get to the trellis to prune - (very carefully!)
