Put them in. I haven't done mine yet, but they'll be going in this week. I have planted earlier. I'm just behind the Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston.

Just got back from planting my mains (earlies went in a couple of weeks back). It's blowing a gale, but the soil is warm, which is the important bit. I'm a bit further south than you, of course, but my plot is fairly exposed to the elements.

Once again, it's a question of whether the soil is workable?

Much less to do with its temoerature?

Ours are going in next weekend....but tbh thats got more to do with DH having an op yesterday & a meeting I wanted to go to today than the climate....apart from the fact that he is my labourer so need him to do the digging part ;D, it needs 2 of us at the plot to be able to get anything done - one to do the work & the other to chase our son away from the other plots ;D...

No earlies this year -- giving myself more space to try a wider range of mains...
so I'll be putting my first spuds in this week.

As usual, I'm at least a week behind most of the old boys on my site.    ::)

MIne will go in this coming week as the children are off school - so me and the littlist one will be doing lots of digging.......him great big holes and me putting in my spuds!

One question??  whats the difference between earlies, lates or whatever.....is it just the time that they take to grow?.....and how do you tell?

Louise

Hi Louise,
You are probably blessed where you are.
Wouldn't worry too much about 1st/2nd earlies etc.
Plant an early now for flavour (recommend 'Arran Pilot'), should be pickable late June.
Also plant now a maincrop, a good allrounder is 'Desiree' for roasting/mash etc.. Lift any time after the tops start to dry off - Late Sept?
Kent may have particular varieties suited to your part of the world. I'm sure the advice will be forthcoming!

Hi, Louise, We planted just one row of Rocket a month ago but covered them in fleece. The rest went in on Saturday.  My O/H insists on the one row really early and covering with fleece, quite honestly it makes about 3weeks difference but he has to be one of the first to dig new potatoes. I let him carry on if thats all it takes to keep him happy.
