Post by: woody on March 29, 2007, 14:45:45
Hi Guys and Girls,
i have about 30 seeds of tiger melon with the stripes, would anybody like to grow them and compare at the end of the season, all the seeds i have planted have germintaed so if say 20 people wanted in you would only need i seed.
So if you are game pm me and i will forward you a seed..i might even give a prize to the largest winning melon ;D

Don't forget to PM me with your address, and once the melon has   germinated, pot on in larger pots, it will be fine in an unheated greenhouse a few weeks after germination, as long as the threat of frost has gone, the hotter the better for them, i think the winner will come from a greenhouse or tunnel grower.

I've already got some so I'll have a go too.

Has melonqueen jeannine got any hints for us on growing them?

ie. when to sow in Scotland etc?

It seems they need a lot of heat to get flavoursome.

Woody, many thanks indeed for the seeds. They arrived yesterday but the envelope looked similar to the ones they use locally for parking fines, so I didn't open it till tonight!

Cheers!

You know I have read this posting several times and have only just noticed the description.    re: anybody fancy growing tiger melons. Are you talking about Tiger melons which are heavily grooved, heavily netted  green members of the musk melon family, or are you talking about the Tigger melons which are colourful , striped and much more smooth.  The two melons are very different to each other. The picture shown  is of a Tigger, not a Tiger.

I am now confused, can someone please enighten me.

I just wondered in case someone has gots seeds from somewhere else bt has no picture on the packet.

XX Jeannine

Hi Jeannine,
i call them tigers, but the seeds came from the melons shown, they came from me via a friend in canada.

no emails emma, although my spam filter is set to ultra high, send another and i'll stick you in my "friendlys" How was the egg ;D.

I have kept the biggest seeds :P, the prize for the winner will be chilli related, all will be revealed.
Remember its the size not the weight, all melons must be photographed with a tapemeasure etc, as weights can be tampered with  ;)

Title: Re: anybody fancy growing tiger melons
Post by: Amazin on August 19, 2007, 00:16:46
All my melons, including the tiggers, germinated perfectly and grew on well - until I put them outside. They were eaten within 24 hours. Gutted ain't the word.  :'(

Woody, if you get any more seeds, I'd be delighted to try them again next year.

You'll find me outdoors with a torch, a pith helmet and a blunderbuss.

Slugs, you have been warned!    >:(

Mine did really well to start with and seemed to get going outdoors quite happily. Then the rain settled in with a vengence and the stems got snapped after they blew over in the wind :'( Was totally gutted, especially as I thought I had weighted everything down properly. :(
