How come, when two years ago I was getting regular crops like those shown below from half seed trays, for the last two years, using exactly the same methods, I only manage the odd one or two? ??? G x

beautiful ! Hope mine look like that when I get back (well hope half of them look like that as the other half are icicles !!!). lol
;D
Thanks but I still want to know why I can't grow them like that now. Top tips welcome please.

There is no answer -well I have one but it`s far too rude to post here ;D
Sorry can't advise but can admire the lovely radish. Mine always have funny little holes in the leaves and big slug bites out of them :'(
I didnt get one radish through last year so I know how you feel. :(
Could have been a duff batch of seed, it does happen! Mind you, they don't like to germinate when it's very hot, and it was very hot last year, so that could have been it.
I planted mine straight into the ground with potting compost Georgie and had loads come up all shapes and sizes, mind you they didn't look as pretty as yours. ;D ;D ;D
Thanks for all your replies. It hasn't been a germination problem, rather that no matter how shallow or deep I plant the seed, the red bit of the root keeps coming above the soil and fails to bulk up. I've even tried earthing them up to no avail. :(
I can't plant them in the ground because I have no room. Maybe as Jenny suggests it's a dodgy batch of seed. These were Scarlet Globe (I need a short variety) but perhaps I should try something else?

Georgie, i may have some spare seed if you want to trial? Not sure of variety, but all our seed was bought this year and would happily send you some to try? Shall I pm you once i've checked the stash this weekend? x
Oh Kitten that is really kind of you, thanks. ;D You'll have to let me know what I can send in return.
G x
Let me see if i can find them first.... ;) ;D x
I had my first pulling of radishes yesterday from a frame. They were planted 4 weeks ago exactly!. Plant the seeds carefully one inch apart, 50 every fortnight for a constant supply. That was a tip I learned from my late father, I used to mock his obsession, now eveyone mocks mine!
Is it okay to sow redish seeds outside now.
Im in Scotland
Do you usually actually grow them in the seedtray Georgie, or just start them off? I've never had much success with them though I got some seeds from Lidls - big white ones & they did very well.
I start planting mine first week of April and then every two/three weeks.
Just sow 50 or so seeds in a 1 meter trough, and leave in a slug free part of the garden

I grew T&M Mirabeau in trays all last summer, lovely french breakfast type. They were delicious til high summer, when they went all woody coz I left them out in the baking heat. ::)
I've got some spare seed if you'd like to try some?
I've got some spare if Kitten can't find any. ;D ;D ;D
just bought some summer crunch for 19p from netto :)
I understand your frustration. I sowed radishes in my glasshouse about 4 weeks ago, I am pulling them now. I also sowed some from the same pack two weeks later and they haven't germinated yet.Go figure!!!!!
Mary. The ones in the picture were grown 12 to a half seed tray. (Yes I know there's only 11 but I'd already eaten one!)
Pye. Isn't French Breakfast a bit long for seed trays? Or do you have especially deep ones? Thanks for the seed offer though.
Thanks Cornykev. :)
aob9. Makes no sense at all does it?
Manics. It's not the price, I just want to be able to grow radishes again. :'(

I don't tend to bother with normal radish, but had a good crop of Rat's tail (pods) and Black Spanish Round (Winter)...
;D
Hi all,
Radish need to grow fast in damp, soft soil,
always harvest them young and little,
if they are slowed down or old they are only good for composting.
So successional sowings are needed to keep a supply going.
Best of Luck, Col
(This post sounds like one of those japanese poems :) )

They're not terribly long, and they grow beautifully in normal seed trays. The offer stands, pm me if you'd like to try some :)
Hi G
Got a packet of 'riesenbutter' radishes from lidl which i'll gladly split with you? PM me if you fancy some to try x
I like the seed tray idea. Never heard of that before so I will definatley be giving that a go.... starting tomorrow ;)
Oooh, just pinch would be lovely, thanks Kitten, PM will be on its way.

Started off 12 in half a seed tray today. Thanks wouldn't have thought of it & never had much luck with them in the ground.
if anyone wants to try a different raddisj have a look at the long scarlet radish from the real seed company - nice purple radish that comes out carrot shape (& size). Ive only got a dozen seeds left so Im not planting mine again this year till later but Im going to follow the trend and do French breakfast in a deep tray in the greenhouse tonight.
I imagine we can use the same potting compost quite a few times with raddish?
If radishes can be grown in seed trays, would it be possible to grow them in large cells? The cells I have are about 2" wide - could I grow some in these?
Dont see why not, considering te size radishes grow to.
Planted mine on Tuesday & about half have germinated today [one had popped up yesterday - less than 24 hours]. Thanks for this tip Georgie - wouldn't have thought of it.
Hope it works for you Mary and you're welcome. I'm going to sow the seeds Pye sent me tomorrow. ;D
G x
OK then! thanks for the advice all, will be sowing a few in large cells tommorow :) Thanks for the help!
Pete
My radishes sown in trays on 7 April. Still got half a bunch of shop-bought in the fridge :-X but couldn't resist pulling a couple of these to taste. Yum. ;D
Cor they look good. I am on my second seed tray ones & have planted another - great way of growing them. :)
I pulled my first batch of radishes they can be since on my blog, too hot for me didn't like them much.
My first radishes (in a pot) were planted on 31 March, but having a little look today only seemed to reveal long stalks and no bulbs so far. The leaves look nice and tall and healthy just like the photo above, but no bulbs. Does this mean that they have failed for some reason?
I have a second sowing 3 weeks later, and the leaves are starting to grow. Anything I can do to ensure this doesnt happen again, or is it the luck of the draw?
I planted cherry belle last month. They seem small and are starting to be pushed out the top of the compost :( I ate one yesterday it was delicious but there are also some small odd shapes.
