Title: Something has eaten my onions!
Post by: okra on March 27, 2007, 21:52:11
I grew some crimson forest onions from seed and planted them out last week, only to find today that all the tops have been munched off. Could it be rabbits or pigeons - any ideas?

I think your thoughts are about right.

I would never dream of not 'netting' early plantings, with so little fresh greens about at this time of year you have offered them a banquet.

Sorry!!   :'(

Tops of mine have been nibbled by..... Mice! Along with the tops of my Late PSB. I would be a bit sceptical but found droppings at the tops of the plants & must've seen about 20 mice today whilst digging!

You could be right Ollie - mice eat my over-wintering carrots earlier in the year

Well, I'm afraid I ended up putting down bait for them. I hate to do this but caouldn't relly find an alternative. I used "quick acting" stuff, and found 2 dead in the bait box within 24 hours!

I covered the whole area with bramble cutting yesterday it might deter foxes that have been digging holes where my onion sets are but I don't know if it will deter the mice
