There has been a decline in my (UK) area over the years of allotments. In the meantime, like lots of other rural villages, there has been a swell in the population, I reckon it's about doubled in the last ten years.
Recently there has been enquiries from quite a few people for allotment land. Jus what is the correct, legal and speedies way to get the council to make a commitment. Can ordinary people actuallt demand that land be freed for allotments where it can be proven that there is a need?
I'm sure someone has said on here that if more than six people want an allotment the council has to provide them. We'll see...
Yes, look on the NSALG website. there's a link on their homepage:
http://www.nsalg.org.uk/ (http://www.nsalg.org.uk/)
Thanks for that.
I've passed it on. Let's now hope for a little backbone to go with the words.
Yes the council have to provide the land if there is 12 or more people waiting for allotments if the say they haven't got the land and you know that builders are purchasing land to build you can ask the council to put a preservation order to stop them buying the land they have to provide land for spots a leisure
It may be worth getting the local press involved.
Keep us updated, you may inspire others. (and we're nosey) ;D
I'm waiting for my town council to respond to my query on their policy on allotments. There are no allotments in our district & the district council just blanked me, so I'm going in at a lower level this time & will see what the response is.
Anybody else in Congleton District out there want to swell my current ranks of one?
Thanks for the tip about the papers, that may be the next step once the town council has responded, so far they're "looking into it".
You have got to keep pushing your council on this, we at Sutton On Sea only had allotments with about 6 people on it so we went to our council and said we want some more land as there was a waiting list of more than 12 people waiting the council said they didnt have any more land available but we found out they were selling land to building firms so we pushed them to put a preservation order on the land to stop the sale we also said we would get in touch with Margaret Beckett the MP in the commons she has something to do with allotments, the council are obliged to provide allotments in you area if their are more than 6 people that want one but to be on the safe side i would try to get 12 people's names on the list also look at the NSALG National Society Of Allotment and Leisure Gardens of the person you need to contact is the president Mr PARNELL tel 0247 6715290
p/s me again forgot to tell you all enquires on NSALG MATTERS SOULD GO TO HEAD OFFICE TEL01536 266576 THE HEAD OFFICE IS O'Dell House,
Hunters Road, Corby, Northants NN17 5 JE
So i'm curious now. Our lottie site is quite big, but even so there is still a 2 year waiting list for a plot. Where do those people stand? Can they demand more land or had the council fulfilled it's obligation? The council does not run our site, we are only to go straight to them if it's a problem with rent, all other matters are dealt with by the assoc.
Not sure about that as you already have big allotment site but worth getting in touch with NSALG to find out but i think if there are enough people wanting allotment then the council have to do something about it but not sure
