Title: Banana Plants
Post by: potterfanpete on March 25, 2007, 09:49:07
I am basing my new garden on an exotic theme - so am obviously looking for exotic plants. I already have some canna rhizomes and dahlia tubers that I bought in our local garden centres sale, but does anyone know where I can buy banana plants on the internet? I've found a few sites, but they're all very expensive. All advice appreciated :)

Morning Pete,

I have used these peeps before:-

http://www.junglegardens.co.uk:80/ (http://www.junglegardens.co.uk:80/)

http://www.jungleseeds.co.uk/ (http://www.jungleseeds.co.uk/)

You can grow bananas from seed quite sucessfully, tho saying that I have some in my propagator that must have been there 2 months with no show!! :o But they were old seed. :-\

Keep an eye out in places like B&Q, Focus etc. thay seem to have become quite trendy, and you can often get a bargain there.

The other thing you could do is put out a request here in the sweap shop, I am sure lots of us have bananas that will be producing offspring when they decide to start growing again!

Highly recommend Jungle Seeds. Try their Ginger as well (think about getting the rhizomes rather than seeds). I've grown the Kahili ginger in pots outdoors all year round for the past three years - gobsmacking ain't the word!
